Carer Support groups

Professionally facilitated groups:

  • provide an opportunity for carers to meet
  • show carers they are not alone
  • encourage open discussion in a safe environment
  • validate the carers role
  • provide opportunities to draw on the experience of others
  • minimise carer isolation

Carer Support Groups held monthly:

Every third Tuesday in Whakatane in the morning, a supervised coffee morning for the person with dementia runs at the same time so that the carer can attend the meetings.

Every Second Thursday in Kawerau in the afternoon.

Details are on our events calendar and in our newsletter.

Support for People with Dementia

We provide coping strategies for people with dementia (as well as their carers/family/whānau) in the early stages of dementia and continue to do so throughout the course of the disease. We run support groups and networks and provide home visits and phone calls. Our professional and compassionate Community Liaison Officers will visit you at home and listen to your needs and the needs of your family in order to address any issues you have.

Support for carers/family/whānau

We provide support and coping strategies for carers/family/whānau when their loved one is facing dementia. We do this through support groups and networks as well as home visits. Our professional and compassionate Community Liaison Officers will visit you at home and listen to your needs and the needs of your family in order to address any issues you have. From there, we will provide on-going support through all stages of the disease. Our field workers also provide advice, support and a friendly listening ear via phone during the more difficult days.

We also provide ‘be-friender’ services so caregivers can have a well-earned break.
