World Alzheimers Day 2010

World Alzheimer's Day 2010

A report released today - World Alzheimer’s Day, 21 September 2010 – says governments around the world are “woefully unprepared” for the tsunami of dementia, which will triple in number by 2050.  In 2010, the total estimated worldwide cost of dementia is US$604 billion.

Alzheimers New Zealand has responded to this report with our own messages, including a push for our National Dementia Strategy 2010 and an insistence that the government and community recognise dementia as the most serious health crisis to be faced this century.

We are asking for the government to recognise dementia as a national health priority in order to get appropriate care and support systems in place to cope with the escalating numbers of people who will develop dementia as our population ages.  Today, 43,000 New Zealanders have dementia, with this number rising to 146,000 by 2050.

Today local Alzheimers New Zealand organisations will host events around Aotearoa to inform their communities of the toll dementia takes, as well as promoting their support, education and advocacy services.
