Alzheimers Canterbury has a diverse and varied Volunteer Programme which helps to enrich the lives of people with dementia and their carers, and supports the Alzheimers Canterbury staff.

By involving an enthusiastic and trained team of ‘companion’, ‘administrative’ and ‘driver’ volunteers, we ensure carers of people with dementia have a much-needed break and can attend support meetings and courses.

The most frequent volunteer need is for ‘companions’, who spend between 2-6 hours per week or fortnight with someone with dementia.  This may involve chatting to them in their home and reading the newspaper together, going out to a local library or café, playing sport or attending a social event together.

This type of volunteering makes a significant difference to the person with dementia, their carer and the community, which in turn can allow them to stay in their own home longer.

Volunteer training and support is provided, and some travelling expenses are reimbursed.
