Alzheimers Whanganui provides:

  • Information Sheets on all aspects of living with dementia throughout the progression of the disease. These Individual information sheets are provided free of charge and provide useful and easy-to-understand information. Please click here for online editions of Alzheimers New Zealand's information sheets.

  • Booklets: Just for you - For people living with dementia and The Dementia Booklet - Information for carers, family and whanau. These Alzheimers New Zealand booklets are an invaluable resource and introduction to dementia and can be found here.

  • Books and Videos/DVDs (Available for Members only) - Our library includes a variety of material on different aspects of dementia.

  • Information on accessing the health and home care services and support available to families at different stages of the disease. Our Community Coordinator is an assessor for the Total Mobility Scheme (Taxi Chits).

  • Newsletters – Quarterly newsletters from Alzheimers Whanganui and Alzheimers New Zealand providing information on the latest news and research into dementia, tips and advice for people with dementia and their carers, book reviews and notice of coming events. Please click on links below to open newsletters.

  • One-on-one - for the person with dementia, the carer and or extended family.
  • Public awareness – quarterly newsletters; we are available to speak to community groups; newspaper articles; public lectures by notable speakers; education in rest homes as requested.
  • Carer Education Workshops – at the Alzheimers Centre, 136 Victoria Ave Whanganui.

The outcomes for these workshops will be that people in the caring role will have a better understanding of dementia, of understanding themselves and the person with dementia.

Course structure:

Session 1: About Dementia

Session 2: Understanding Changed Behaviour

Session 3: Supporting A Person With Dementia

Session 4: Living Well With Dementia

Session 5: Where To From Here

Session 6: Looking Back To Look Forward

This programme will be run in three times a year and will be shared between Whanganui,Marton/Taihape/Ohakune/Raetihi. The sessions in the rural areas will depend on demand.

This is a 6 week course every Tuesday 10.30 - 1.00pm
