 supporter meetings

The aim of these meetings is to provide a safe environment in which people who are supporting a person affected by a dementia can meet and share their experiences. Meeting together can help us to understand that we are not alone.  For more information, please click here.

Self Supporters Group (for people living with dementia)

These groups are for people who are at varying stages of their journey with dementia. Please call the community worker in your area (see our Team) to discuss whether these groups may be appropriate for you. For more information, pleasclick here.

Our Living Well With Dementia Workshop series are run on a regular basis. The course aims to assist people to live well after a diagnosis of dementia through information sharing, meeting others, and the opportunity to learn from a person already living well with dementia.

Dementia Essentials 101

 

Key knowledge and skills for family/friend supporters of a person with dementia in the early days post diagnosis.

This 3 session course will assist you to:

  • Learn about the causes and symptoms of dementia
  • Understand the changes in behaviour that may occur
  • Consider financial and legal implications
  • Develop your skills as a supporter
  • Meet others in a similar situation

Programme sessions Include:

  • Dementia & symptoms
  • Promoting positive interactions
  • Understanding changing behaviours
  • Legal and Financial considerations
  • Support for the Supporter

Dementia Essentials 102


Key knowledge and skills for family/friend supporters of a person with dementia as their condition advances.

This 3 session course will assist you to:

  • Understand and respond positively to changes as dementia progresses
  • Become well resourced to maintain safety
  • Be prepared for the future
  • Meet others in a similar situation

Programme sessions Include:

  • Understanding the progression of dementia
  • Maintaining safety of a person with dementia
  • Promoting supporter wellbeing
  • Preparing for the future (including expolring respite/long term care facility options)

 referrals

Alzheimers Wellington receives referrals from a variety of sources such as GPs, Care Coordination, District Health Board and Public Health Organisations staff and other community groups. We also take self and family referrals from people who have heard about our services.

To make a referral, please fill out this form and scan and email it to referrals@wellingtonalzheimers.co.nz.

Support from our Dementia Advisors also includes:

  • Information and advice on managing dementia related issues following a home visit or telephone contact
  • Advocacy support
  • Assistance with linking to other support services
  • Total mobility assessments for discounted taxi fares
