External support services
Once you have been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer's disease by a specialist, the specialist may refer you back to your GP who can offer you a range of services. You may feel you do not need these services at present. It is still important however, to find out what is available for the future. Practical help and support are available from a wide range of people. Your local Alzheimers organisation is available for support as well as social workers, counsellors, your GP and government support services.
Memory groups
A memory group is a group of people with dementia who meet on a regular basis to share thoughts and feelings and learn ways of coping. Contact your local Alzheimers member organisation on 0800 004 001 to see if they provide a memory group or similar programme in your area.
Social services
In order to access support services, you will need to have a needs assessment. The needs assessment service can be contacted directly (details are available through your local hospital or on the Ministry of Health or Eldernet websites) or you can be referred by your local Alzheimers organisation.
The services you may be able to access include:
- help around the home
- meals on wheels
- equipment to make life easier and safer for you at home
- attendance at a day programme
- respite care
