Awareness and Appeal Week 2011

Annual Awareness and Appeal Week 2011
Alzheimers New Zealand has had to be creative and flexible with our major fundraising campaign in 2011 to adapt to the changing philanthropic landscape of New Zealand, in what has been a particularly difficult year for this community organisation.
The 2011 Annual Appeal and Awareness Week was scheduled to begin in May however; the Christchurch earthquake shifted priorities for many of the 22 local Alzheimers organisations. While the national awareness campaign was launched at this time, (promoting messages about the impact of dementia on an individual, their family, whanau and community, and the good work being done locally by Alzheimers New Zealand to support these people) only a few local Alzheimers organisations pursued this scheduled campaign, with the majority suspending these activities so drive support towards organisations in need in Christchurch.
July sees much of this fundraising activity ‘reactivated’, with sponsors Progressive Enterprises promoting the major fundraising vehicle for Alzheimers New Zealand, ‘Cuppa for a Cause’ through their Countdown stores.
“Cuppa for a Cause is one of many ways that the New Zealand public can show support for the important work of local Alzheimers organisations and the many people in our communities affected by dementia.” says Anthea Armstrong, national fundraising and marketing manager. “Friends, neighbours and colleagues can get together over a cup of tea and a lamington and share memories, experiences with dementia, or even a good old gossip, while clearing out their small change to make a big difference to an organisation that needs to be supported.”
Countdown stores will be selling specially marked packs of Signature Range tea and coffee, and Nescafe coffee to support Cuppa for a Cause, with .10 - .20 cents from each pack benefitting the organisation. The iconic lamington also gets a facelift, in special Alzheimers New Zealand packaging with proceeds also benefitting the organisation, courtesy of Elite Pavlovas.
As well as Cuppa for a Cause, some local Alzheimers organisations will be collecting donations on the street to raise funds, collecting outside supermarkets, libraries, and local landmarks, as well as hosting a myriad of fun activities and events. To find out what is happening in your area visit www.alzheimers.org.nz. Volunteers are always appreciated and interested people should call their local Alzheimers organisation to get involved.
These fundraising activities continue through until September 21 where the global dementia community collaborates in an awareness campaign, this year titled ‘Faces of Dementia’. Alzheimers New Zealand plans to use this opportunity to share the experiences of those who face the daily challenge of dementia, from many perspectives. To share your story please email kimberley.ebbett@alzheimers.org.nz.
Alzheimers New Zealand hopes to raise $500,000 in 2011 to support their mission to make life better for all people affected by dementia. Please give generously to collectors, or visit your local Countdown to plan for your own Cuppa for a Cause. To find out more about how you can help, or to make a donation visit www.alzheimers.org.nz
